Beliefs

What did Catherine believe about communication within learning interactions?

My work is underpinned by the ideas of Argyris and Schön on single and double-loop learning and Model I and II communication. I believe that respect, openness, and honesty are fundamental within a learning interaction. It is imperative to:

  • maintain respect for the person, irrespective of how their practice appears;
  • maintain respect for yourself, irrespective of how powerful or powerless you feel;
  • remain open to answering questions and to saying why some questions are hard to answer;
  • be honest and say what needs to be said in a respectful way.

In Model II communication, challenge is encouraged through the following “rules”:

  • say what you think;
  • say why you think it, giving real reasons and being explicit about your assumptions;
  • check what the other participant(s) think, and what they think of what you said.

What do you believe about communication within learning interactions?

What do the expressions “open communication” and “effective engagement” mean to you? What do you look for in an “effective” interaction? How do you know when an interaction is or isn’t effective?

Whose ideas do you base your responses on?

How were your beliefs evident in the practice situation you outlined earlier? What do you think the other participant(s) believe about communication within learning interactions?
