Learning and impact

What has Leeana learned and how is it impacting on her practice?

I based my judgments during my observation of Wini on my own values, beliefs, and assumptions about how to respond in this situation, without checking these out with Wini. When I think about the observation and my role within it, I realise that:

  • it’s important to surface and check out assumptions before and after an observation – for example, in relation to the roles of the observer and the observed;
  • questions based on data and evidence, such as transcripts, rather than my impressions and beliefs may give a clearer direction for learning.

If learning is to occur, it’s imperative to share openly, honestly, and respectfully – all the pakeke in this case have indicated that they welcome challenging feedback if it is given in this spirit.”

What have you learned and how will it impact on your practice?

How would you sum up what you have learned from working through this case?

How would you now answer Leeana’s inquiry question: “How can I ensure my interactions with teachers and colleagues are professional and keep students’ needs to the fore while being true to kaupapa Māori?”

Here’s what the case participants think:

What challenges or questions can you identify in your current professional interactions? How do they link with identified learning needs of teachers and students? What evidence do you have?

Which of these challenges or questions would make the most useful focus for an inquiry?

See Conducting Inquiry (pages 43–75) for guidance on inquiring into your practice.
