Clip 4: Reading

Delwynne:

The very first reading we picked up was Argyris and Shön’s single- and double-loop learning. And it was through that reading that we realised that people could learn superficially or at a much deeper level, and the deeper level learning was what was sustainable. Once you’d had that double-loop learning, you couldn’t ever go backwards. So as an ISTE team we decided to look for, and create opportunities for, double-loop learning, and that’s what we often did.

And to achieve a double-loop learning, we actually have to shake up the belief systems that set up the first single-loop learning in the first place. So that’s what, that was a, that was probably the most driving piece of research we used at that moment.

Another big one was Art Costa – Art Costa’s cognitive coaching was another big one. So as opposed to telling people what to do, we’re enabling them by allowing them to set their learning goals, and allowing them to reflect on the type of learning that they think they would see if that was in place – the type of success criteria. So if you want an engaged student, well what does that look like? What are you looking for? And rather than me give them the list of what to look for, they were developing it themselves. That’s been really powerful.
