Clip 8: Impact on students

Jo:

My personal theory has changed in that I’ve realised how much emphasis one needs to put on the exploratory consultative work one does with teachers, to really find out where they’re at, where the kids are at. I’ve built up a relationship with them where we are able to speak quite openly, so they’re able to tell me what they really do need.

We’ve also got student voice, through student focus groups, and finding out if what we’re doing is having an effect for them. The overwhelming thing that comes through is that the students have an understanding – it’s really clear – of how they can get from achieved to merit, and merit to excellence. It’s demystified that, so it’s getting inside the teacher’s thinking, and that the strategies they’re learning make them independent.
