Beliefs – Perspective from John Loughran

Developing a respectful approach when working with others is crucial if ideas are to be genuinely heard; it is the basis of meaningful collaborative inquiry. Leeana’s comment – “how I behave in my interactions reflects my values and how I care for people” – is truly at the centre of developing respectful relationships in which we have the confidence to take risks and to speak honestly but in an appropriate manner. However, as the case participants point out, such a position needs to be “lived out”; it mustn’t be just rhetoric nor an excuse to push our own views upon others. This means demonstrating genuine care for others and showing through our actions and words that respect and trust are at the heart of our desire to present alternative perspectives – without making judgments.

There are interesting parallels between Leeana’s “wrestle with the challenge of bridging the two worlds of kaupapa Māori and working as a professional educator” and the challenges that arise in collaborative inquiry. When others share ideas different to our own, we may also experience a “dance in the mind”. This case is a reminder that in such situations, a guiding principle is to ensure that our interactions are respectful and professional while keeping students’ needs to the fore.
